What people remember from their time on the water
These accounts come from guests across all three ssundas tours. They are unedited beyond formatting.
From the people who were there
"We had three hours in the morning and nearly let it pass as 'just a boat trip.' Siti had this way of pointing at a cliff face and explaining 400 million years of geology in two sentences that actually made sense. I still think about those sea stacks."
"The lunch alone was worth it — I was not expecting a proper meal out on the water. But it was Dayang Bunting that surprised me most. I had no idea there was a geological lake in the middle of an island. The whole day felt well thought through."
"The border crossing sounds logistically complicated and it would be without the crew handling everything. We just showed up with our passports. The evening at anchor between islands with that dinner — I genuinely did not want to leave. The reef at Koh Lipe was extraordinary."
"Lovely experience. The group size made a real difference — I have been on boats with 25 people and everything is rushed. Here we could actually stop and look. My one note: the coconut water ran out before the second half of the cruise. Not a big issue, just mentioning."
"We are not usually 'tour people' but a friend recommended ssundas specifically. The naturalist aspect was what convinced us — we wanted something more than swimming and photos. Azri's cooking was genuinely impressive for a galley setting. We would do the overnight next time."
"The stargazing at anchor was something I was not expecting to be the highlight. Razif pointed out constellations used in Malay navigation — I came for snorkeling and left thinking about the stars. The reef was also excellent. I will be back."
A few journeys in more detail
A geologist's morning off
A retired geologist visiting Langkawi for the first time with her daughter wanted to see the karst formations she had read about, but was not sure a standard tour would get into the science.
Siti and the guest spent most of the cruise in conversation. What began as an explanation for the other guests became a back-and-forth between two people who knew the subject from different angles — one from research, one from thirty years of fieldwork.
The daughter emailed later to say her mother had described it as one of the best mornings she had had in years. The naturalist still mentions that conversation when guests ask what the tours are like.
A family with different interests
A family of five — two grandparents, two parents, and a teenage child — with varying comfort levels in the water and very different ideas of what a good day looked like.
The structure of the Four Islands Day allowed each person to engage differently. The grandparents stayed aboard at the snorkeling stop and had tea with Azri while the rest swam. The teenager spent time with Siti identifying reef fish. Both grandparents visited Dayang Bunting lake, which required only a short walk.
They booked private charters for two subsequent family trips over the following year. The structure's flexibility was what made the difference — nobody was asked to do something uncomfortable, and everyone had a full day.
Two days, a long friendship
Four friends from different countries reuniting in Langkawi for the first time in five years. They wanted something that would create a shared experience rather than a list of attractions visited.
The two-day format gave them time to simply be together without an itinerary pressing them forward. The evening at anchor — dinner, conversation, and later the stars — was, by their own account, when the trip became meaningful rather than just pleasant.
One of the four has since booked a second Tarutao voyage, this time with their partner. They described the first trip as having reset something in their understanding of what travel can be.
